Usually the treatment time is around 30 minutes. Over all an appointment will take about 40 to 45 minutes for set up, assessment, discussion and the treatment.
One treatment a week is suggested and the number of treatments needed depends on the condition.
During the first appointment, your veterinarian will discuss all of these specifics and obtain informed consent.
It will depend on the condition treated. For acute condition, your pet may only require 2 treatments. However for more chronic conditions, 4 to 6 treatments may be required. A complete treatment plan is discussed with you at the first appointment.
After a first treatment, some clients report that the pet was more quiet than usual or appears tired. However everything returns to normal after 24 hours.
Acupuncture is very safe, the needles are sterile and never reused after a treatment.
Some animals are apprehensive during the first treatment and the treatment time will then be shorter. However on the second treatment, these animals can relax and get used to the needles. If an animal is quite needle phobic, then acupuncture points will be stimulated using the laser. The treatment time is much shorter when using the laser.
Most cats do very well with acupuncture and tolerate needles without any issues. Some cats do not want to be held for 30 minutes and therefore the laser is used because it decreases the treatment time.
